Anton J. Clark – Bali Landscape Company
“When we started our landscape project for ICON BALI it was only for a one-dimension vertical garden. Then we kept on challenging the idea to make this four-storey vertical garden 3 dimensional with internal rooms to be more interesting, informative and interactive. Visitors can enter, walk through and be entertained with different experience on every level.
I have been doing landscaping in Bali for nearly 15 years and have come across hundreds of beautiful plants including rare and interesting species. It is an honor for me to create one of the 8 Wonders of Icon Bali which showcases the typical foliage and flora species from the Balinese forests to visitors from all over the world at ICON BALI. That is why we call this the Balinese Vertical Forest.”
And we do not stop there. We continue throwing ideas on the table, cook it, reshape it until we are certain that this is the best we can do in the landscape area to feature unique concepts based on the wonders of Bali.”
Sahlan McKingley – McKingley + Team Architects
“Graduating with honours from the Faculty of Design, Architecture and Building at the University of Technology, Sydney (UTS), Sahlan has focused his work in the Australasia region. Sahlan founded McKingley + Team Architects (MTA) in 2013. Having been raised in Tokyo, Jakarta and Sydney, Sahlan brings contemporary western architectural concepts and technologies whilst maintaining cultural awareness and sensitivities for what can and cannot work in South East Asia. Sahlan is focused on Environmentally Sustainable Design principles and technologies. In 2018 he successfully completed ‘The Architectural Imagination’ course from the Harvard University Graduate School of Design.
MTA is the principal designer for the project undertaking the architecture, interior design, master planning and leading the landscape and sustainability components. MTA has created a seamless design work together to create something truly unique. This can be seen in the way the landscape design is fully incorporated into the architecture and interior design.

Allowing MTA to design the architecture and interior created a seamless design work together to create something truly unique. This can be seen in the way the landscape design is fully incorporated into the architecture and interior design.
The unique facade takes inspiration from the landscape, flora and fauna of Bali with the forms of the main facade being inspired by terracing rice paddies, a banana leaf (daun pisang), a frangipani (kamboja) and a snake fruit (salak). The Interior’s planter boxes and hanging gardens further emphasize and define the spatial qualities of atrium. The result is a building like no other in the world.
The Indonesian archipelago has a seemingly endless variety of flora, with each island having their own indigenous plant life. As part of MTA’s sustainable approach to design, we want to use indigenous plants and flowers in the project. To assist us in this effort, we collaborated with the Bali Landscape Company in specifying the most appropriate plants and flowers for the project. The ‘Salak Façade’ uses Ipomea (Katang-katang) which is found locally in Bali.
At the center of the development is “Jaje”, the first floating market in a retail center in Indonesia, which seamlessly opens to the beach and sea. This water feature brings the outside-inside experience and also functions as a sustainable system by cooling the building and thus reducing the usage of mechanical cooling systems.
The single corridor layout is a seamless transition from indoor retail to gourmet restaurants with al fresco dining to the beach clubs and then the beach. A clear customer friendly journey that is efficient and easy to navigate with views of the stunning beachfront.
The result is a building like no other in the world.”
