SOS RESCUE KITCHEN
Sanur is never short of community events. One that has been consistently engaging community involvement to support a good cause is The SOS Rescue Kitchen.
SOS or Scholars of Sustenance founded by Bo Holmgreen is a non-profit foundation established in Indonesia in 2016 with the aim of reducing food waste by rescuing good condition excess food from hotels, cafes as well as other establishments and turn it into not only delicious but also nutritious meals intended for people in most need, orphanages and institutions.
One of SOS’ current initiatives is SOS Rescue Kitchen that was started on 17 June 2020. It has 3 locations in Bali, with the main one located in Sanur. This Rescue Kitchens operates 6 days per week and produces roughly 1,500 meals per day that are distributed to the people in most need all over Bali.
The SOS Rescue Kitchen in Sanur is stationed at Rumah Sanur on JL. Danau Tamblingan. It is headed by Chef Nick & Chef Delmi who lead a group of eager volunteers from the Sanur community and all over Bali to prepare around 9,000 meals every week, hand delivered directly to the children, elderly, and people that lost their jobs due to the pandemic.
It is very heart-warming to see individuals and corporations within the Sanur Community coming together in this extra ordinary time to support members of our community that currently need help.

“Moved to Sanur in 1996 from Denmark, been living here since – so 25 years and still loving it. It’s been and still is a very excited journey to follow the development of Sanur. Even with the growing of businesses and visitors, it’s still my Kampung Sanur.

The great trends we have seen over the last couple of years is for sure the more diversity in activity, tourists and companies. It’s sometimes a hot potato to discuss those things, but we can’t stop the development and shouldn’t either, in the end it’s what’s going to bring us all into the future.
People who live in Sanur are very “local”, and I’m sure a lot of people around me will agree that as a real “Sanur peep” we really prefer not to travel outside the Sanur sign! With all those new things happening I hope one day I don’t have to search outside my kampung to find great restaurants, go to the movies or find a gym that fits me. I can do all my shopping here – I’d love that very much, it’s all in my hood.
My favourite activity is for sure Scuba Diving, and here Sanur is actually the power centre of whole Bali. Sanur has way above the biggest numbers of dive centres on the isle, we have a great network between us and easy access to all the dive sites around Bali within relative short traveling time.
In the future I see Sanur as the best place to be thankful for a very strong local spirit. Sanur is a good example on that we can accommodate new development without losing the culture, traditions and kampung vibes we are so famous for.“

“I’ve been living in Sanur for almost 10 years now and in that time I’ve gotten to know it quite well. From its beautiful sunrises which I catch at least a few times a month, the lovely array of varied eateries where you can sit back, relax and enjoy a delicious meal with good conversation to the quaint nightlife with live music and bustling vibes. Outside its known as Sleepy Sanur which in many ways it is but its like this in the best possible way.

Want to find a quiet spot on the beach just for you? To enjoy the glistening night sky, gentle breeze, ocean air and just think. Well that’s easy to find. Want to walk home at 3am after you’ve done you’re thinking at the beach? Its completely safe to do so. There’s a cozy quality to Sanur, like entering a comfortable bed with an even comfier blanket. Once you get nestled in, you will find it hard to leave.
The variety of restaurants and cafes that have been opening up has been a refreshing change as now I can get a delicious kebab or burger without having to drive all the way to the other side. Its also been nice to see more and more events happening in Sanur. It is nice to see the variety and diversity of people and places that are opening up here without feeling that Sanur is slipping away or fading to become another crowded area in Bali. There’s a reason many people here don’t go to the “other side” so one thing that’s important and which has stayed this way is that change has happened without it being invasive and overpowering.
I love reading at the beach, feeding the beach dogs, sunrises, eating food, cycling and quiet evenings in Sanur. Hopefully things evolve as they have been over the last few years, gradually, with a conscious direction as to what Sanur needs not just for the tourists but for the community who live here and make Sanur what it is.“

“I am originally from Sanur, born and grew up in Sanur. This destination has values that cannot be found in other places in Bali, more and more people have become increasingly aware of this fact. Sanur now is following development trend without leaving its original character. It is a humble, warm and comfortable place to hang out for a long time.

My favorite activities in Sanur are off course strolling on the beach, bathing in the sea water and during low tide walking on the wave breaker as well as observing the tide pool, a habit that I have been doing since childhood with my family.
The people of Sanur hold their tradition and culture in high regard. They are able to accommodate changes while at the same time keeping their religious ways of tradition and culture.”

“I moved to Bali from Holland in 2002. Sanur attracted me for its green beauty and village feel. The location is also strategic for commuting to my paprika farm in Kintamani three days per week. Coming home is always nice and relaxing.

Back in the nineties, tourists in Sanur were predominantly Europeans of middle age and above. Now you can see various nationalities of all ages, giving more energy to the atmosphere but yet the cultural aspect is still here. Evenings in Sanur nowadays are alive with trendy cafes and bars opening. New international standard beach clubs and the jogging – bicycle track along the beach are really a plus for both visitors and residents. This makes Sanur now a unique destination that offers everything people expect from coming to Bali.
The fact that all those are just within few steps away from where I live makes my friends and I go to the beach in Sanur more often and spend more time here more than ever.”

“I have been living in Jimbaran but been working in Sanur for 11 years. Commuting from Jimbaran to Sanur now takes just around 30 minutes and gives daily amusement from the beautiful scenery on the toll way. Over the years I have seen Sanur grew from a quiet traditional place to a vibrant meeting point that it is now.

What’s also great to have now is the young generation from Denpasar opening coffee shops here. I am very proud to see the Balinese young take responsibility of running it themselves.
This business draws many young clients from Denpasar to hangout regularly in Sanur, creating a dynamic and energetic vibe in the area. After all, Sanur is only minutes away from Denpasar.”
